Although we have had classic cars as an adjunct to some of our other events, the Guildford Lions Classic Car Display was a new venture that proved to be popular with the car owners and the public.

The Club managed to get a Road Closure Order for the town’s famous historic High Street and the cars on display varied from the 1920s through every decade to the 1980s.

Organiser Lion Vic Quayle commented “As a petrolhead I was able use my contacts in motor clubs and enthusiast groups to gather together an eclectic selection of cars.”

All the main UK, European and US manufacturers were represented and had there been more space we could have had more than 150 cars on display rather than the 70 places that are available in the High Street.

The weather stayed fine, if very windy, which precluded the erection of gazebos for a local charity, GASP who provide basic engineering training for troublesome youngsters. We also had Team SURTES from the University of Surrey who manage and design racing cars to take part in an inter-university motor racing competition.

The car owners were offered tea and coffee in the 16th century Guildhall where they were already looking for the display to be repeated again soon.
