Nature Children Environment - a Good Recipe Members of the Bexley & Sidcup Lions joined children and teachers at the Aspire Academy, Welling on two environmental projects spreading much joy to the children and much needed improvements to the play areas in their special needs school. The junior school is part of the Forest Schools programme through the North West Countryside Partnership. The Club donated materials and equipment which the children are provided with to encourage time outdoors and in nature. Connection with nature from an early age has recognised health benefits for children and young people, building well-being and resilience. Study has shown that the amount of time children are spending outside is declining with today's children spending 50% less time in nature than their parents. Further studies have shown that 74% of 5 to 12 year old spend less than 60 minutes of time outside each day. Forest Schools is a long term program that supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. Its is a child centred inspirational learning process, that offers opportunities for holistic growth though regular sessions developing confidence and self esteem. The donation included Para cord, Scout Kettles, Fire Steels and palm drills. On 6th November, another environmental project carried out in the grounds of Aspire Academy was planting of 5 trees donated by the Club. In the wooded play area of the grounds, planted was a Hazel tree, an Elderberry tree, two Photinias and a Sambucas Nigra Black Lace. The budding junior gardeners have these areas for play, nature and gardening activities over and above their usual play grounds. As some of the children want to be handy with a spade, they helped dig the holes for the trees and line with compost and grit. Watering after planting each tree was obvious fun for them, lets hope they keep it up the care and these trees can be enjoyed for years to come. The tree planting was done in memory of departed Lion Vipin Sevak, the donation having been provided by his wife, Lion Pami Sevak. Project lead, Lion Baldev Bahra was accompanied by LP Kalwant Main, Lions Pami and Vandhna. Both Projects will be followed up with further activity from the Club Manage Cookie Preferences
