Record Turnout for the 13th Annual Tonbridge Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k Races A chilly but dry Sunday morning saw the early preparations for the 13th annual Tonbridge Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k races, as volunteers and event organisers set up the start/finish line and Race Village at the Judd School on Brook Street. This popular event attracted a record number of nearly 1,500 entrants, who gathered eagerly to take on the picturesque routes through the scenic Kent countryside. The races began promptly at 9:00 AM, with Dame Kelly Holmes—Tonbridge’s own Olympic legend—on hand to start each race at 15-minute intervals. Dame Kelly was also present to greet the early finishers and present them with their well-earned medals, creating an inspiring atmosphere for runners and spectators alike. The Half Marathon, a 13.1-mile course running from Tonbridge to beyond Leigh and back, saw impressive performances. The fastest finisher was Adam Hickley, who completed the course in a remarkable 1 hour and 5 minutes. Among the women, Nicolene Hanekom led the way with a time of 1 hour and 19 minutes. The Tonbridge Half Marathon has come a long way since its inception in 2011, when it was established as a joint initiative by the Tonbridge Lions Club and the Tonbridge Rotary Club to raise money for local charities. The event, which has grown to include the 10k and 5k races in recent years, continues to support local charities and good causes, with proceeds being distributed by the Lions and Rotary. The race organisation is now managed by Run Through, a national running events company, under licence, while volunteers from the Lions and Rotary provide essential support by marshalling the course. The addition of shorter distances has expanded the event’s appeal, attracting runners of all abilities and fitness levels. Participants and spectators enjoyed the vibrant atmosphere throughout the day, with plenty of community spirit on display. As the event continues to grow, it remains a firm favourite in the local running calendar, drawing runners back year after year. Manage Cookie Preferences
